About
About Anne McCune
Anne McCune is a landscape painter based in Rochester, New York. For more than 35 years, she has explored a variety of artistic media, ultimately focusing on encaustic wax and acrylic paint.
She maintains a studio in Rochester’s Neighborhood of the Arts and continues to draw inspiration from the natural landscapes of the region and beyond.
Artist Statement
The focus of my art has always been the natural environment, and the most basic elements of nature are often the most evocative for me. That place where the sky meets the land, where the ocean dissolves into clouds, or the brief moment when one season quietly gives way to another can be deeply compelling.
As a landscape painter, I pursue the energy of the land and attempt to capture the natural textures and color palette of the environment with every brush stroke. Through these paintings I hope to create an evocative narrative for the viewer while conveying the atmosphere and emotion of a particular place.
Working Process
Painting outdoors has become an important part of McCune’s creative practice in recent years. Working en plein air requires quick decisions and a heightened awareness of light, atmosphere, and shifting weather conditions.
This immediacy has been both energizing and exciting, influencing how she approaches painting in the studio. Many scenes first painted outdoors in acrylic are later reinterpreted in encaustic wax, allowing the landscape to evolve through additional layers, texture, and depth.
